Author Reading: Gerry William, The Black Ship & The Woman in the Trees

August 22, 2020 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm PDT

Join author and educator Gerry William to hear selections from two of his novels, The Black Ship and The Woman in the Trees. Gerry is of Okanagan-Shuswap ancestry and is a member of the Splatsin Indian Band in Enderby, B.C.

The Black Ship is the first science fiction novel written by a Canadian First Nations author. As an avid “trekkie” and and sci-fi reader himself, Gerry believes that although science fiction is a field rarely explored by First Nations writers, it provides many of the techniques and structures needed if the future is to be explored in a meaningful way.

Gerry will also read selections from his novel, The Woman in the Trees. Set during the time of first contact, the story takes place around what is now Vernon, BC., moving effortlessly from myth to dream time to narrative real time. Spanning the historical period from 1780 to 1860, The Woman in the Trees addresses a time of massive upheaval for the Okanagan people (the Syilx).

The event will include an opportunity for conversation with Gerry after the readings.

Inspired by George Ryga, the Ryga Arts Festival is a vibrant celebration of the arts in the spectacular Okanagan valley of British Columbia.
